Emerging industries of
strategic importance including biology, Internet development, new
energy, new material, cultural and creative industries and
new-generation information technology are becoming the new engines for
Shenzhen's development. The marine industry, aerospace and aviation
industry, life health industry, robot and smart wearable devices are
becoming its future industries.
In 2016, the added value generated by the city's
emerging industries was 784.77 billion yuan, up 10.5% from 2015,
comprising 40.3% of the city's GDP. The Internet industry generated
76.75 billion yuan, up 15.3% from a year ago. The added value of new
material industry was 37.34 billion yuan, up 19.6% from 2015. The added
value of the new energy industry was 59.23 billion yuan, up 29.3% from a
year ago. The added value generated by robot, wearable devices and
intelligent equipment industries was 48.64 billion yuan, up 20.2% from
2015.
INDUSTRIAL BASES
Shenzhen has placed importance on the development of
biology, Internet, new energy, new material, cultural and creative
industries, and new-generation information technology industries.
Construction of 23 industrial bases for emerging industries of strategic
importance is under way. The International Bio-valley Baguang Core
Area, Royole International Flexible Display Base and Kuang-Chi Future
Technology Park are under construction.
INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT
In 2016, Shenzhen's R&D investment was 80 billion
yuan, comprising 4.1% of the city's GDP. The investment goes side by
side with that of Israel. The number of Shenzhen's PCT (Patent
Cooperation Treaty) applications totaled 19,600, accounting for almost
46.6% of the national total. Tencent, ZTE, Salubris and BYD won the
China Gold Patent Award in 2016, which accounted for 20% of the
awardees.
Shenzhen has made key breakthroughs in core technologies.
Its new generation communication technology, gene sequencing, new
display technology, new energy vehicles and more are the leading
technologies in the world. In 2016, 16 projects that were conducted by
19 Shenzhen colleges, institutions and enterprises won the National
Science and Technology Award. The 4G TD-LTE technology and applications
made by Huawei, ZTE and Yulong won the grand prize of National Prize for
Progress in Science and Technology. The Huawei Polar Code became one of
the key standards of 5G. In the area of biotechnology, BGI-Shenzhen is
globally known for its excellence in new DNA sequencing as well as
extensive biological information analysis. While SuperD's glasses-free
3-D is recognized as a world-leading technology, Royole Corporation has
developed more than 200 core technologies of flexible display.
The competitive strength of local companies has been reinforced.
Shenzhen has witnessed an increasing number of local companies step
onto the world stage. Huawei, one of the biggest telecommunications
equipment suppliers and mobile phone manufacturers in the world,
achieved a business revenue of 520 billion yuan in 2016, up 32% from
2015. As an Internet giant, Tencent generated 108.38 billion yuan in
revenue in the three quarters of 2016. BYD, one of the world's largest
producers of new energy battery and vehicles, achieved a revenue in 2016
of 103.98 billion yuan, up 29.95% from the previous year. Also, a great
many specialized companies have emerged in various fields. For
instance, Hepalink plays a major role in the global market of
Heparin-related products. DJI-Innovations occupies over 70% of the
global share in the civilian UAV market, whereas UBTECH Robotics
Corporation is a pioneer of intelligent humanoid robots, with a market
value estimated at US$1 billion.
