BECOMING a highly advanced "Smart City" with
easy access to wireless Internet and online civil services via mobile
devices is a goal Shenzhen aims to achieve in the near future, announced
the city's economic, trade and information commission recently.
Hu Xiaoqing, the commission's deputy director, joined a call-in radio program Sunday to share some of the city's new plans for turning Shenzhen into a model "Smart City."
Hu said that Shenzhen will start to build an integrated online platform for civil services that incorporates all levels of government departments so that residents can enjoy the most efficient and high-quality civil services.
The platform will have an app that can be accessed on any mobile device. Shenzhen residents will be able to file applications for all kinds of government services on the app.
Extending the service range of free Wi-Fi is also one of the plans to raise Shenzhen's modernization level, said Hu. It is the aim that all areas with dense populations will be covered with free Wi-Fi.
Mobile payment has already been set up on most public buses, and the city is currently working with the Metro company to install mobile payment devices at all Metro stations.
Public security is part of the "Smart City" plans as well. Hu said that Shenzhen will construct a variety of online platforms to supervise food safety, geological disasters and other emergencies.
Moreover, an urban transportation management system will be built to monitor the city's real-time traffic situation.
